Ohio State Football: 3 Buckeyes who need a big offseason
No. 1: Josh Fryar, offensive tackle
The Ohio State football program’s biggest weakness heading into the 2023 season is no doubt its offensive line. With the likelihood of both starting tackles Dewand Jones and Parris Johnson Jr. leaving for the NFL, the need for someone to step up at offensive tackle is huge.
The player currently on the roster with the best chance at claiming a starting role this spring is Josh Fryar as he was the de-facto sixth offensive lineman this past season. He would line up as an extra lineman in two and three tight end sets when Ryan Day wanted to go big on the offensive line.
Fryar also filled in admirably when Dewand Jones was injured for the Indiana game. In fact, he played so well that some questioned whether or not he should be in the starting lineup. But with two empty tackle spots and a major void in tackle recruiting over the past two cycles, Josh Fryar absolutely needs to have a strong spring and claim one of the positions.
If Fryar can have a big offseason, it would lessen the burden on offensive line coach Justin Frye to develop a young player quickly. Fryar, who will be a senior next season, has the seniority and experience needed to step up and have a huge offseason.
