As the Ohio State football team prepares for the offseason, three players need to step up to ensure a successful 2023 season.

The Ohio State football team will be a program in transition this offseason. It happens mostly after every season comes to a close, but it feels like the Buckeyes will be opening a new chapter of Ohio State football this spring, mainly due to the fact that the Scarlet and Gray will have a new signal caller under center.

With so many questions to ask about this roster and holes that need to be filled, this offseason is shaping up to be a significant one for head coach Ryan Day. But three players may just hold the key to the 2023 football season. Here are three players who need to have a big offseason and make a leap.

No. 3: Kyle McCord, quarterback

Okay, this one seems pretty obvious, and it could apply to fellow quarterback Devin Brown as well. But the fact remains that Ohio State will go as far as its 2023 quarterback takes them. I have the utmost confidence in Ryan Day’s ability to develop a quarterback that will be ready. The proof is in the pudding whether it’s Dwayne Haskins, Justin Fields, or C.J. Stroud.

But by all means, Kyle McCord should be looked at as the favorite for the open job, so ensuring that he has a strong offseason is vital, not only for his confidence but for the program at large. He needs to come into spring practices and take command of the team. He needs to be a leader and show the other players that he’s up for the tough challenge of being Ohio State’s starting quarterback.

The job just isn’t going to be given to him. McCord will have to earn it as he will have stiff competition in Devin Brown. But as long as McCord takes care of business during spring ball, he should be looked at as the starter for 2023.
