Ohio State Football: Buckle up for a Buckeye QB Battle
As the Ohio State football season ended last Saturday night, so did the college career of quarterback CJ Stroud. Fans need to get ready for a QB battle.
The Ohio State football team not only lost the Peach Bowl last Saturday evening but also its quarterback. C.J. Stroud is expected to leave Columbus following a historic two-season stint as the starter. He will declare for the NFL draft soon and prepare for the combine.
But Ryan Day will have a true decision to make as the last time Ohio State had a competition, it really wasn’t much of one. C.J. Stroud was the clear choice over Jack Miller and a true freshman named Kyle McCord. The five-star McCord will likely be seen as the favorite over Devin Brown, who was a top 50 national player in his own right.
McCord has the seniority advantage as he’s been on campus for a season longer than Brown. He also has a start under his belt, defeating Akron last season as a true freshman. But don’t count Brown out of the battle just yet. This race could last deep into fall camp as Brown has really seemed to have impressed coaches over the past few months.
Brown was seen at the Peach Bowl throwing darts during the open media period for practices and his running ability has to be very intriguing to re-incorporate into this offense. This surely is going to be the first time since the Cardale Jones/ J.T. Barrett quarterback controversy of 2015 that we’ve seen an actual quarterback battle in Columbus.
Another aspect of this to keep in mind is the connection between Kyle McCord and Marvin Harrison Jr., who were teammates together in high school at St. Joe’s Prep outside of Philadelphia. They both probably have each other to thank for earning Ohio State scholarships and the trust that these two have for one another shouldn’t be disregarded during this competition.
Buckle up Ohio State fans for what’s surely to be an epic quarterback battle between two very highly rated recruits. But if Devin Brown wins the battle, don’t be surprised if McCord bolts, leaving only Brown and incoming true freshman Lincoln Kienholz as the only scholarship quarterbacks on the roster.
