The Ohio State football team is in the midst of a very busy December. Could the Buckeyes land the former No. 1 overall recruit from 2022?

The Ohio State football program continues to move at a fast clip as things are really heating up for the Buckeyes. Between finishing the 2023 recruiting cycle, preparing for Georgia, attending to staff changes, and navigating the transfer portal it’s amazing that Ryan Day still has a full head of hair.

But things got really interesting on Monday afternoon after the former No. 1 overall recruit in 2022, Travis Hunter, announced he was entering the transfer portal. The five-star cornerback played at Jackson State this past season under Deion Sanders and he did not disappoint. While missing five games due to injury, Hunter truly was a shutdown corner when healthy with two interceptions and eight pass breakups.

His athleticism also allowed him to play some receiver for Jackson State as he caught 18 passes for 190 yards and four touchdowns. He is an extremely gifted athlete and is exactly the type of player that Ohio State needs in its secondary.

With a glaring hole at corner and Ohio State already showing interest in fellow transfer portal cornerback Fentrell Cypress of Virginia, could the Buckeyes make a run at Hunter? Yes, I believe they should, even if the odds are stacked against them.

Naturally, Colorado is going to be seen as the favorite for Hunter with Deion Sanders accepting the head coaching position in Boulder. But Georgia will also be a favorite for Hunter as he is from Suwanee, Georgia and the Bulldogs have a great recent track record of cornerback play. Florida State is also expected to be in the mix as Hunter once was a Florida State commit before flipping to Jackson State.

So, while the competition for his commitment will be tough, I believe that cornerbacks coach Tim Walton needs to make a push and prove that he can recruit top-end talent. The Buckeyes absolutely need a player like Hunter who has big-play ability in its secondary.
