Ohio State Football: Buckeyes should be as aggressive as possible
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team has not been shy about playing aggressively on defense. One could argue they played too aggressively against Michigan and it cost them the game. I would argue that too. But the offense has been playing with a lack of aggressiveness that is startling.
Ryan Day has decided to not trust his offense on a number of occasions to pick up fourth downs. Against TTUN, there was a specific time in the third quarter when they were in a fourth-and-short situation and decided to punt. Michigan went on to score a touchdown on the following drive.
Perhaps Day was still scarred from the failed attempt on fourth down to Cade Stover earlier in the game. The problem with that play is that he shouldn’t have called it to go to Stover. Day needs to be aggressive with the best players that he has on the field.
That means getting the ball to Marvin Harrison Jr., Emeka Egbuka, and Miyan Williams as much as possible. Those are the three guys that have proven time and time again that they can be relied upon. Quite frankly, those are the only three guys I trust to make a big play on offense right now.
Day needs to get aggressive with his play calls to get those guys involved as much as possible. Throwing the ball over the middle of the field is a must. Bubble screens need to be dismantled as part of the offense too because they don’t freaking work. I’m tired of seeing four of those a game.
This is Day’s biggest challenge as a head coach yet. You could tell he didn’t get much sleep heading into The Game. All that work did little to help the Ohio State football team come out on top. They need to prepare smarter, not harder for the Peach Bowl.
Am I saying go for it on every fourth down? No. But they should more often than not. Georgia is a dangerous team, and playing them scared is not going to give the Buckeyes the best chance to win.
