Ohio State Football: Buckeyes announce coaching hire
As the Ohio State football team is preparing to take on Georgia in the Peach Bowl on New Year’s Eve, the Buckeyes just announced a coaching hire.
The Ohio State football team announced over the weekend that senior advisor to the head coach, Keenan Bailey, will take over for Kevin Wilson as the new tight end coach. Bailey has been seen by many as an up-and-comer in coaching circles, and Ryan Day wanted to make sure that he would stick with the Buckeyes.
Current NCAA rules have stated that programs can have 10 full-time assistants and the hiring of Bailey would bring Ohio State back to that number. But there is momentum for a rule change this offseason that would allow an unlimited number of full-time staff. That has to be considered when looking at this hire.
The Buckeyes have recently promoted from within three times with the hires of Corey Dennis, Parker Fleming, and now Bailey. All three of them are under the age of 35. This begs the question of if coach Day is doing what’s best for the program. Experienced coaches such as Kevin Wilson, Greg Mattison, and Mike Yurcich have all recently left the program.
I’m still hoping, granted the NCAA rule change takes effect, that Ryan Day brings in an experienced offensive coordinator, even if that coach isn’t calling plays. It was great for Day to have a coach like Kevin Wilson to bounce ideas off of as I’m sure Wilson had a major input on game plans and play calling.
However, as these hires suggest, Day likes to promote from within. Odds are Brian Hartline, Justin Frye, or both get titles as offensive coordinators. Let’s just hope that Day knows what he’s doing when it comes to putting his staff together.
