Ohio State Football: Biggest reason why C.J. Stroud fell short of Heisman
By Ryan Stano
Heading into the 2022 season, the Ohio State football team had a few people that were among the favorites to win the Heisman Trophy. C.J. Stroud was actually the preseason favorite over everyone to win the award based on the fact he was a finalist for the Heisman last year.
Not only was Stroud’s talent from a year ago a big reason why he was the preseason favorite, but how good Ohio State was projected to be was also a big reason. Over the years, the Heisman has evolved into a “best player on the best team” award as opposed to just going to the best player period.
Stroud had the lead for the trophy heading into the final week of the season because of how well the offense looked while he was leading it. Not only that but the Buckeyes were undefeated and ranked second in the country. It was Stroud’s trophy to grab.
The Ohio State football team’s loss to TTUN is why C.J. Stroud lost the Heisman.
The final game of the season is always a big one for Ohio State. This one was bigger than usual because of what happened in 2021. The fact that the Buckeyes only managed to score three points in the second half is what doomed Stroud’s chances to win the Heisman.
After that kind of performance in the last game of the season, it was hard for voters to ignore the fact that he couldn’t lead his team to a victory when they needed him the most. Even though Caleb Williams also failed to do so, he had big passing and rushing stats. Stroud doesn’t run the ball.
The fact that Stroud refuses to run the ball is part of the reason why the Buckeyes lost the game and, ultimately, a big reason why he walked away without the Heisman. We can only hope that he will show a willingness to do so against Georgia in the Peach Bowl.
