Ohio State Football: These big changes need to happen
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team has now lost two straight games to TTUN. It’s the first time this has happened since the John Cooper era. It seems like the Buckeyes have another Cooper at the helm now. If they don’t want that to be the case, they need to make changes.
I’m also not talking about small changes. The Buckeyes fired most of the defensive staff after last year. Those were big changes. That helped improve the defense for most of the year, up until Saturday. More big changes will be needed if the Buckeyes want the results of The Game to be different.
There are three big changes that I think would do this program well. Not only do I think that but I think these changes are necessary if they don’t want to get passed up as a program. There’s an argument to be made that they are no longer the dominant Big Ten program.
If Ohio State wants to get back to being the dominant Big Ten program, they have to make these changes. The first of them has to deal with Ryan Day’s duties.
1. The Ohio State football team needs a new play caller.
Playcalling was an issue all year long for the Buckeyes. It seemed like they called ten bubble screens every game that never went anywhere. Runs were predictable and out of the same formations. The Pistol was exclusively used as a run formation all year long.
It’s clear that Day has lost the ability to call a dynamic offense. While his play designs are still elite, he doesn’t know when to use the correct plays in the right situations. Kevin Wilson needs to be given play-calling duties to change how effective the offense can be.
Day needs to be smart enough to realize this as well. It’s the only way that the offense can be elite in both the passing game and the run game. The run game was a disaster all year long because of the same, boring calls being called every game. It was predictable and easy to stop.
The next change that needs to happen has to deal with the approach to The Game.
