Ohio State football: What does debacle to TTUN mean for Stroud’s Heisman case?
By Jacob Rhymer
The Ohio State football team fell to TTUN for the second season in a row. A lot of the focus in the result of the loss is on the coaching of the Buckeye football team. But, how will the debacle to TTUN affect C.J. Stroud’s Heisman case?
Stroud has had an incredible season for the Buckeyes and he’s put up ridiculous numbers. Even though the score didn’t look like it, Stroud still had a pretty good day. He completed 31 of his 48 passes, threw for 349 yards, and threw two touchdown passes. However, he also threw two careless interceptions late in this game.
Coming into this week, the Heisman was coming down to Stroud and USC quarterback Caleb Williams. A win today against the Buckeyes’ rival would’ve locked up the Heisman trophy for Stroud. The loss today definitely decreases the quarterback’s chances of winning the award.
Now the ball is in Caleb Williams’ court. The Trojans beat Notre Dame in the finale to their regular season in primetime on ABC. Williams accounted for four touchdowns and 267 total yards. USC still has a legit shot at making the College Football Playoff, which increases Williams’ chances as well.
It’s been 16 years since Ohio State has had a Heisman trophy winner. To begin the season Stroud was the odds-on favorite to win the award. Stroud will still be in New York for the Heisman trophy ceremony, but his chances at winning the award are now hanging by a thread.
Barring any help from teams in the mix to make the playoff, the Buckeyes’ likely bowl destination is the Rose Bowl. With a National Championship more than likely out of the question, this could’ve been the last time we watched Stroud in the Scarlet and Gray.
