Gene Smith changes his mind which greatly benefits Ohio State football
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team is set to have one more clash with an opponent before the biggest clash of all comes to Columbus. In a couple of years, the Buckeyes would have already clinched a spot in the College Football Playoff when it expands to 12 teams. If they were to lose to TTUN though, they’d still host a home playoff game.
Gene Smith is on record as saying that he wouldn’t want to host a playoff game at Ohio Stadium and he would rather play it somewhere neutral like Lucas Oil Stadium. He claims that it’s a student-athlete safety issue and that the Shoe isn’t equipped to play games in such cold weather.
Nevermind that he won’t change the turf back into grass in the name of student-athlete safety, it seems the fans have finally gotten him to change his mind. Smith now has said that he would be open to having a home playoff game in the Shoe if the Buckeyes were to earn one.
I’m not sure why he didn’t come to this conclusion in the first place. It would be a massive advantage for the Ohio State football team to be able to host a team from the South in December. Southern teams never have to play in the cold and wouldn’t be able to handle it.
We still have a few years before this even takes place but it’s nice to know that Smith isn’t just ignoring fans. Not only would it generate hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue for the university but it would be a massive advantage in winning a playoff game.
While he did say he was open to it, nothing has been confirmed yet. I guess we’ll have to wait until the Playoff expands before we get a straight answer from Gene.
