Ohio State football: Why does Ryan Day refuse to give injury updates?
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football program has had to deal with a lot of injuries this season. In fact, it’s been a season defined by injury. Both running backs have missed games, all three top corners have as well, and so has the Buckeyes’ best player. Jaxon Smith-Njigba has hardly played at all this year.
Through it all, Ryan Day has refused to give any updates on who is hurt with what and how long they might be out. Reporters ask him every Tuesday what the updates are and he just brushes them off. He never gives anything definitive. Why does he do this?
This was never an issue when Urban was here. Urban always gave injury updates whenever they happened. You know why? Because he knew that his team was good enough to beat the other team no matter what. He didn’t need to play games about hiding who might be available and whatnot.
Ryan Day should give injury updates about the Ohio State football team.
Day should have the same mentality. His roster is more talented than every team he will face this year in the regular season, yet he keeps injuries close to the vest because he’s worried about some sort of advantage the other team might get if he discloses them.
Day owes it to the fans and to the media to let us know what is going on. He shouldn’t be afraid. It’s actually concerning that he is afraid to give out updates because that tells me he doesn’t have faith in the team he has to go out and get the job done anyway.
I’m a little bit surprised this isn’t something that is mandated by the NCAA after the introduction of legal sports betting in several states. I understand the availability report comes out about 90 minutes before the game, but there really should be an injury report given throughout the week like the NFL does.
Unfortunately, nothing is going to change anytime soon on this front. Day refuses to stop being stubborn.
