Former Ohio State basketball recruit flips to Michigan
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State basketball team has a top-five recruiting class in the country for the 2023 class. They have four prospects currently, although they might add one more. Originally, George Washington III was the first commit for this class that is so good.
Ultimately, he decided to de-commit. This may have been in response to the fact that Bronny James was making visits to Columbus and also plays the same position Washington III does. Whatever the case may be, he left and now has announced his new home.
That home is TTUN. Not only did he de-commit from the Ohio State basketball program, but he decided to go to their hated rivals instead. It’s a bit of a slap in the face to a program from his home state, as he is from Dayton. Washington III is a four-star recruit right now.
Perhaps he was mad that the Buckeyes seemed fine to let him go elsewhere he wants to stick it to the program as much as possible. Maybe he wanted to stay in the Big Ten to stick to Ohio State and this was his best offer at doing so, although TTUN only offered him last month.
Whatever the reason, the former Buckeye recruit now has a new home. There’s no doubt that the rest of Ohio State’s 2023 class took notice and will remember that when they play next year as freshmen. They are going to want to see what he is missing out on.
This just adds another level to the Ohio State/Michigan rivalry. While it’s not as prevalent in basketball as it is in football, there’s certainly no love lost between these programs still. It will be interesting to see if Washington III can become an impact player for the Wolverines at some point in the future.
