One of the best hires this past offseason for any team across the country was made by the Ohio State football program. Ryan Day made wholesale changes to the defensive staff and brought in Jim Knowles to lead everyone as the defensive coordinator.

Since taking over, Knowles has already made staggering improvements to the defense. The Buckeyes have a good defense instead of a terrible one, and that gives them a real shot to win a national title. Day clearly made the right decision when he brought Knowles on.

Day had his weekly press conference today ahead of the Iowa game. He was asked if he thought that Knowles, who has been a head coach in the college ranks before, sees being defensive coordinator with Ohio State as a destination job.

Ryan Day thinks Jim Knowles could forever stick around the Ohio State football team.

Day responded that he thinks he could see Knowles with the Buckeyes for as long as they want him there. He thinks that Knowles really enjoys being a coordinator and that Columbus is a great place for him to be because he had friends here already before joining Ohio State.

If that is indeed the case, that would be huge for this program. Knowles has proven to be one of the best defensive coordinators in all of College Football. If he stays at Ohio State, that would be huge for recruiting. Recruits have definitely been taking notice of how well the defense has played this year.

Not only that, but the results on the field speak for themself. A top-ten defense paired with an elite offense is a surefire way to win a lot of games. That’s why the Buckeyes are ranked as the second-best team in the country in the polls right now.

Knowles hasn’t even shown us how good this defense can be yet. He hasn’t installed the entire defense because he hasn’t had to. The Buckeyes have blown out every opponent they’ve faced so far this year. There’s been no reason to put in new wrinkles yet.

I hope that Day is right and that Knowles and his family feel that Columbus is his home for the foreseeable future. He makes this program better and makes his players better too. Losing him would be quite a blow.
