TV Executives love putting Ohio State football on at night
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football program is one of the most valuable programs in all of college football. In fact, you could argue they are the most valuable based on ticket sales and TV views. That’s why TV executives love it when they can get Buckeye games on their networks.
That’s clearly the case this year. It’s been announced that the Wisconsin game on September 24th will be a night game, as expected. It will be a 7:30 pm kickoff on ABC. This will be the third time in the first four games for the Buckeyes that they will be playing a night game.
Considering this is the last chance that ESPN/ABC has to put Ohio State on in primetime, this is unsurprising. With the new TV contract taking effect next season, the Buckeyes won’t be broadcast on their family of channels anymore unless they are playing an SEC non-conference game.
When Ohio State announced that this game was going to be a blackout, we knew that it was going to be a night game. You don’t have your fans wear black for a 3:30 game. Ohio State was going to pull whatever strings they needed to to make this game kickoff at night.
Even though Wisconsin isn’t as good as we thought they were, this will still be a cool atmosphere. It will be the Big Ten opener and Wisconsin can make some things frisky. Ohio State will still be favored though. It will be a fun game to be at and watch from home.
This will probably be the last game that will be a night game at home this season. There’s one other game that could be a night game on the road and that would be Michigan State. We won’t know for a few weeks about that though.
