The 2022 season is the 20th anniversary of the 2002 Ohio State football team that won the national championship. They will be celebrated by the fans during the opener on September 3rd against Notre Dame. That’s not the only significant anniversary happening this season though.

This is also the 100th year of Ohio State football being played in the Shoe. There will be a special celebration for that as well. As part of the 100th anniversary of the Shoe being built, former Buckeye coach Jim Tressel gave a speech about memories and what it was like to be in the Shoe.

As always, Tressel gave an excellent speech. When he was hired, he understood the importance of tradition at Ohio State. He mentions in his speech that no matter what happened on the field, his team would stay out and sing “Carmen Ohio” after each and every game.

Tressel also mentioned that he wanted his team to experience the Skull Session. Teams and coaches hadn’t historically experienced that before games. He made sure that his players went to them so that his players could see how much fans loved Ohio State football.

Tressel was universally loved by the players he coached and the Ohio State fans. It’s good to see him back and speaking with so much passion about his time in Columbus. He will be there during the celebration of the 2002 team he coached as well.

Both Urban Meyer and Ryan Day have followed in Tressel’s footsteps in making sure their players embrace the Buckeye traditions as well. Both treated The Game with the reverence that it deserves as well. The program is certainly better off for having hired Tressel.
