Ohio State Football: Big Ten not done expanding
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team will already have two new conference opponents starting in 2024 when both USC and UCLA join the Big Ten. Many thought that when that bombshell dropped that the Big Ten was going to add more teams immediately, maybe poaching other Pac-12 schools.
Nothing happened and now it seems like we are at a point in time of general peace in terms of conference expansion. That might not be the case for long based on what Kevin Warren said recently in an interview with HBO. Things look like they are going to change even further.
Warren said he could see the Big Ten expanding all the way to 20 teams at some point, although he did not indicate any sort of timeline. This is not a surprising revelation though, especially when you look at some of the intricacies of the new TV deal that was announced.
In that TV deal, the amount can go up if new teams are added to the conference during the length of the deal. Before Warren even had this interview, that right there tells you that the Big Ten is not content at sitting where they are right now. More programs are coming.
We don’t know what those programs could be yet, but you can bet that the ADs at each school have a plan that they are trying to follow. Adding more programs means more money, and that’s one thing we can all agree motivates these programs in the conference.
My guess is that the conference could add more members within the next two years. I think they are done adding programs right now, as everyone is gearing up for the start of football season. But I think that the Big Ten is definitely expanding further.
We’ll see how far it goes. We’re getting closer and closer to two giant conferences battling it out against each other.
