Ohio State Football’s defense keeps getting rave reviews from offense
By Ryan Stano
We are less than three weeks away from the Ohio State football team starting their season. It will be one of the toughest games they play all season because they take on Notre Dame, which is a top-five team. It’s one of the games that will define their season.
In order for the Buckeyes to win that game, the defense has to be ready to go from the start. They were a bad unit last season, especially in the two losses. Even though they are breaking in a new system, the offense is still having some issues moving the ball against them.
This is an offense that put up more points and yards than anyone in the country, mind you. That offense is having some issues moving the ball against the defense. Cade Stover talked about how the defense is a lot harder to go up against than last year and called Jim Knowles the smartest defensive mind he’s ever seen.
Those are some big compliments from a guy who has been around the program for a long time. If that is indeed the case, then maybe this defense really will be good enough to allow this team to win a national championship this season. We already know the offense is good enough.
I love that the coaches and players have said that the defense is improving, but I’m not willing to say anything definitive on that front until we see them in action against another opponent. The opener against Notre Dame is going to tell me a lot right away.
Notre Dame is a good team. I expect this game to be hard-fought and I expect the defense to struggle a bit at first. How they settle down is what I’m watching. That will tell me if the mentality is really different than what it was a year ago.
