Ohio State football: Cornerback depth becoming an issue
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team has two solid cornerbacks in Denzel Burke and Cam Brown. Burke has superstar potential and could be an All-American this year. Brown is solid and got better as last year went on. Behind them though, the Buckeyes don’t have a whole lot.
Jordan Hancock got hurt during camp and is now out for a little bit. He had been splitting first-team reps with Brown as well. Now that he’s out, others have had to step up. JK Johnson and Jantzen Dunn have had to get reps, but Dunn is hurt now too.
Even if those guys didn’t get hurt, depth at cornerback is still an issue. None of those guys have had any experience playing in games that matter. They’ve hardly got any experience playing in games at all. If Burke or Brown go down, the Buckeyes are in trouble.
The only guys who have experience are Lathan Ransom and Cam Martinez. Neither of them has been entrusted with first-team reps at any point. With the injuries that the Buckeyes have right now in camp, this is their chance to get some experience.
Ryan Day did say today that none of the injuries in the secondary are long-term injuries. They all should be back relatively soon. That’s good because they need to get revved up for the season as it starts in just three weeks. Ohio State needs to be as healthy as they possibly can be for the opener.
Burke and Brown are really good and Hancock has looked really good in practice. As long as those three stay healthy throughout the season, the Ohio State football team should be fine. If one or more of them go down, they could be in some trouble. Hopefully, it won’t come to that.
