The Ohio State football team plays its first game of the 2022 season in less than a month. They will take on Notre Dame in just a few weeks in what could be the premier non-conference matchup of the season. Today is the first day they start to prep for that.

Today marks the first practice of preseason camp. It marks the first time that they really try to set up gameplans for the Fighting Irish, all though the coaching staff has certainly thought of those already. Today could be the first time they actually practice those gameplans.

It’s an exciting time for the Ohio State football program. It’s always great on the first day of practice because it builds up anticipation for a season that is right around the corner. This also gives us our first look at the freshmen who did not enroll early and participate in the Spring Game.

Jim Knowles’ new defense will really get rolling these next few weeks. The defense should be fully installed and players should know their roles on that defense by now. I’m really interested to see how they do against this offense in practice the next few weeks.

I don’t know if the Buckeyes will be able to know the defense like the back of their hands by the time the opener comes around, but they should be darn close. This new defense is supposed to help the defense set the tempo and not let the offense do it instead.

In just a few short weeks, we’ll be in the Shoe cheering on the Buckeyes against the Fighting Irish looking for a win. These early practices will go a long way to deciding that. Ryan Day knows that and will certainly have his team practicing hard.
