Can this Ohio State Football team handle adversity?
By Ryan Stano
Every great football team in college football has been able to handle adversity when it’s come their way. They can figure it out and keep winning games even when things don’t go the way they were planned. That’s not something the Ohio State Football team handled super well last year.
The Buckeyes lost their first game to Oregon in the home-opener because they couldn’t figure out how to stop the running game. They did not handle the adversity well because they let the Ducks score three times on the exact same running play. They didn’t learn from their mistakes.
The same thing happened during the Michigan game. They couldn’t stop the run again. If Ohio State wants to win the national title this year, they have to be able to handle adversity. Can this team be the one to do that and go all the way?
Some of the team can for sure. We saw what happened to C.J. Stroud when he faced adversity early last season. People, including myself, were calling for his job after the Oregon loss. All he did was kill it the rest of the season and finish the year as a Heisman Finalist.
The defense is more concerning. Clearly, they didn’t handle the adversity well last year. I keep saying that we think the defense will be better, but we don’t know that for sure. We won’t know for sure until the Buckeyes see Notre Dame walk out on the field for the opener.
If I had to guess, I think this team is more prepared for the adversity than it was last year. The offense is going to be just as good, and the whole defensive coaching staff is different. I think the maturity of the team is an asset too.
All I know is that I can’t wait until September 3rd!
