The Ohio State football team had the best recruiting class in the country after getting Brock Glenn in the class. The Buckeyes are very heavy on the offensive side of the ball for the 2023 class. Now, it’s even more offensively focused after the Buckeyes lost their best cornerback recruit.

Dijon Johnson, a four-star cornerback from Florida, has de-committed from the Ohio State football program. He is the tenth-best cornerback in the country and now has re-opened his recruitment. That leaves the Buckeyes with two other corners in the class.

Defensive recruiting has already been an issue for this class. I knew that the defensive recruiting was going to lag behind now that they have a new defensive staff, but I didn’t think it would be this bad. While it’s not awful, it still should have been so much better.

There’s still a chance for the Buckeyes to improve the class on defense, this is a troubling early trend. Ryan Day has no issues recruiting offensive talent, but there’s no reason why they shouldn’t be able to have better defensive talent. The program has too much tradition.

Before you think this is a trend that is a major problem, remember that it’s very early in this defensive staff’s tenure. If this happens again next year though, feel free to sound the alarm. At that point, things will have to change because you can’t have two stinker defensive classes in a row.

Again, it’s a little hard to be so critical of a class that is still the second-best in the entire country. But Buckeye fans should have high standards for the program. They should be able to get almost any recruit they want. NIL money isn’t an issue and getting kids to the NFL isn’t either.
