Is it good for the Big Ten that Ohio State Football dominates?
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team has been the team that has won the Big Ten more than any other program in the last two decades. They have been the team that has been the best throughout most of those years and it hasn’t been particularly close.
Most years, Penn State, Michigan State, and TTUN have been the programs that have put up the most fight in the Big Ten East. Even in those off years, Ohio State has been great. In the past 20 years, Ohio State has either won or shared the Big Ten title.
My question is simple; is that good for the Big Ten? Is it good that one single program has dominated the conference? The Ohio State football program has either won outright or shared 11 of the past 20 Big Ten Championships. They have been the dominant team.
Ohio State is the most prominent program in the Midwest and one of the most prominent in the country. They are one of the most recognizable college football programs, but is it good that they dominate one of the best conferences in the country? I think that it is.
I say that because dynasties seem to get the attention of everyone in a sport. Alabama has been the dynasty nationally in college football and they get everyone talking. The Patriots were the dynasty in the NFL and that got everyone interested. The same goes for the NBA and MLB.
Ohio State is the dynasty in the Midwest. It’s better for the Big Ten if they are the relevant program. If they are the best program in the Big Ten, that means that the Big Ten is in the national conversation for a title. No other program in the Big Ten gives them that exposure.
Whether or not the Buckeyes are able to keep that up is up for debate. The way they’ve been recruiting suggests that they will be able to, but we’ll see.
