Ohio State Football: Luke Wypler gets recognition
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team has had a lot of players pop up on preseason watchlists. Mainly, it’s been the big three offensive players, those being C.J. Stroud, TreVeyon Henderson, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Now, another member of the team is getting on a watchlist.
That player is center Luke Wypler. Wypler was thrust into a tough situation last season after Harry Miller wasn’t able to come back and play due to some mental health issues. Wypler was all of a sudden the starting center and did a relatively good job there.
Now, Wypler is being named to the Rimington Award preseason watchlist for the best center in college football. It’s nice to see him get some recognition heading into a critical season for not just him, but the entire offensive line for the Buckeyes.
The offensive line got beat up a lot last season in critical stages of games. They didn’t move the line of scrimmage the way that they should have been doing. Justin Frye was brought in to fix that mentality as well as some scheme things. Wypler will be at the forefront of that as the center.
While I don’t think Wypler will win the Rimington Award, I think he can be someone that could be one of the best centers in the Big Ten. He will now have a full offseason knowing that he is going to be the starting center and can prepare as such. That shift in mentality should help him a lot.
We’re going to find out pretty early whether or not the offensive line is improved against Notre Dame in the opener. That’s going to be a really tough opener for the Buckeyes to win, even if with all of the talent that they have on the roster.
