Ohio State Football: TreVeyon Henderson on Doak Walker watchlist
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team has the best passing game in the country. With that being said, they still had a pretty decent running game a year ago. TreVeyon Henderson had a heck of a year despite not beginning the year as the starting running back.
This year, a lot of people are expecting big things from Henderson. Henderson has already been named to the preseason Maxwell Award watchlist for the best player in college football. Now, he has been added to the Doak Walker watchlist for the best running back in the country.
Henderson will be even better this season. He enters this season as the unquestioned starter and best running back on the roster. He also won’t be rusty. Coming into the 2021 season, he hadn’t played football for a year because his high school canceled his senior season in 2020.
The Buckeyes should be improved up front as well, which should also help Henderson have a better year. I think there’s no reason Henderson shouldn’t eclipse at least 1,500 yards rushing. He had 15 rushing touchdowns last year too, so I’d expect he could get to 20 this year.
Ohio State may not seem like a run-first team anymore, but Day still loves to run the ball and set up play-action pass plays. Henderson is still the best running back in the Big Ten, so they need to give him his touches. He’s a big play waiting to happen every time he touches it.
We’ll see what kind of numbers he can put up this year for the Ohio State football team. He may not win the Doak Walker award but he will still have a great season. He might be the top contender for that award in 2023 depending on what happens this year, I can tell you that.
