Ohio State Football most desirable Power 5 program in the country
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team has some of the best fans in the world. They have alumni in almost every country and people tune into their football games in every part of this country. That’s part of what makes them such a national brand and a desirable program.
Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde ranked all 69 Power 5 schools on their desirability. What he means by that is if all of the conferences were to just blow it up and start from scratch, who would the conferences want to join their conference the most?
He used a number of different metrics to measure this. He used academics, all sports (which include 19 sports used in the Capital One Cup rankings), football ranking, football attendance, and broadcast viewership. Using those rankings, he listed each program from 1 to 69.
Ohio State was ranked as the most desirable program in the country by these metrics. The Ohio State football program really helped raise their ranking in this. They were second in football ranking, third in football attendance, and tied for second in viewership.
It’s not a surprise that Ohio State would be the most desired program in the country by conferences. They are the national brand of all national brands. as you can see by these rankings, they give you the best of all worlds possible in a college program.
What was surprising to me is that TTUN finished second in the country. Two Big Ten programs were first and second. Their academics helped them more than Ohio State’s in these rankings. But the Ohio State football program was ranked ahead of theirs.
This is a very interesting list and an interesting concept to think about these days with all of the conferences looking at realignment. What do you think about the rest of the list?
