Ohio State Football: Can C.J. Stroud fix QB curse?
By Ryan Stano
I want you to name one quarterback from the Ohio State football program who went on to have a successful career in the NFL. Go ahead, just one. What’s the matter, having some issues? Let me help you; it can’t be done. The Buckeyes don’t have a single one in their history.
Let’s take a look at some of the past guys. Justin Fields was a rookie last year and struggled, but I’m not giving up on him by any stretch. Dwayne Haskins was a first-round bust before his tragic death in the Spring. Terrelle Pryor had to switch to wide receiver because he wasn’t making it as a quarterback.
Troy Smith had a couple of decent games but only started 8 games in his NFL career. Even the highest chosen Ohio State quarterback, Art Schlichter was taken fourth overall by the Colts back in 1982, was a complete bust, and has been in and out of jail due to a gambling addiction.
The Buckeyes have had plenty of success with their quarterbacks while they’ve been in college. Now, the latest player to get a crack at changing that shoddy history is C.J. Stroud. Stroud might be the best hope that Ohio State has had in a while for a successful NFL career.
Stroud will be a top pick. He might end up being the highest quarterback taken in Ohio State football history next season and will be the franchise quarterback for some NFL squad. I think he’s up to it though. He, unlike many of the previous quarterbacks mentioned, had struggles early on that he was able to bounce back from.
Stroud’s response to the adversity early last season will help him be a successful NFL quarterback next year. But that’s a long time from now. Let’s just enjoy what he gives us this year first.
