The Ohio State football program has had a really good summer in terms of recruiting for the 2023 class. They have hit on multiple five-star receivers, a bevy of secondary players, and are looking to do more damage on the defensive line in the next few days as well.
Unfortunately, Notre Dame has also had a good year in recruiting. Marcus Freeman has done an excellent job of getting recruits to buy into his program despite him being a first-year head coach. Because of that success, they have one of the best recruiting classes in the country.
Right now, Ohio State and Notre Dame keep going back and forth for the number one recruiting ranking for 2023. As of this writing, Notre Dame has the top spot, but they also have three more commits in the class than the Buckeyes do. Those extra commits are what’s giving the Fighting Irish the edge.
No matter who comes out on top of this recruiting cycle, this battle is a sign of things to come. Freeman has shown the Buckeyes that this program is not going anywhere. In fact, he wants to take them to a level that Brian Kelly couldn’t quite get them to.
Things get even spicier if Notre Dame ends up joining the Big Ten. That would bring the battle onto the field more often. They will play this season and next season in a non-conference battle, but if the Big Ten gets its way, it will become a conference battle soon after that.
A lot still needs to be decided before that becomes a reality. What is a reality is that Ohio State will need to contend with Notre Dame for prospects all over the Midwest more frequently than they used to.
