Ohio State Football: Is Notre Dame worth the trouble?
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team will face Notre Dame in the opener on September 3rd. It will be the first time since the 90s that these teams have faced each other in the regular season. But if things continue to progress as they have, this matchup could be a much more regular occurrence.
With the addition of USC and UCLA, the Big Ten is expanding. There’s no chance that they stop at just adding those two members either. The Buckeyes are already going to face both of those programs starting in 2024. Could they be facing Notre Dame that season too?
The Big Ten has reportedly shut down talks with Oregon and Washington until Notre Dame makes a decision on whether or not to join the conference. Adding Notre Dame would be huge for the Big Ten. It would add value to the TV deal that is about to be announced, and it would help make them the most powerful conference.
Notre Dame has always been resistant to joining a conference. They have valued their independence for years and they already have their own TV network in NBC. The question is whether or not that independence is worth the money increase they would see by joining the Big Ten.
Is Notre Dame worth all of this trouble for the Big Ten? I mean, it is just one program after all. I still have to say that it is because of how big of a brand they are. They are a worldwide brand that has fans all over. Notre Dame brings eyeballs to the TV screen and that’s what the Big Ten is concerned about.
We’ll have to see what Notre Dame decides. They could join the Big Ten or they could join the ACC full-time. What they decide is the next domino in conference in expansion.
