Ohio State Football adds another four-star corner for 2023
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football program continues to do very well on the recruiting trail for the 2023 class. The last two weeks have been filled with commitment after commitment. Today added yet another really good prospect to the Buckeyes’ 2023 class.
That’s because Jermaine Mathews, a four-star cornerback, has committed to the Ohio State football program. Matthews is listed as the ninth-best prospect in the state of Ohio. Although he’s listed as an athlete, he projects as a cornerback for the Buckeyes.
Matthews stands at 6’0 and 175 pounds. He’s not the biggest guy, but he is one of the fastest. He runs a 4.35 40-yard dash so you know he can keep up with fast receivers. He is another burner out there at corner that the Buckeyes wanted to go out and get.
Matthews chose Ohio State over Cincinnati and Alabama. He is actually from Cincinnati and goes to Winton Woods High School. Tim Walton did a good job of keeping a really good in-state prospect in the state of Ohio. That’s what Ryan Day wants his assistants to do.
This commitment keeps Ohio State at the top of the recruiting rankings. Matthews is now the fourth cornerback that the Buckeyes will have in the class of 2023. Because of that, their work at that position is likely done for this year. You might see them bring in a safety though.
This is the type of recruiting class that the Buckeyes needed. They had to revamp the secondary after the last two years watched them have poor performance. Now, it’s up to the coaches to develop them into elite players. They clearly have the potential to be elite, otherwise Ohio State wouldn’t have recruited them.
I can’t wait to see how this class ends up turning out.
