Ohio State Football: Why skipping a class isn’t a bad thing
By Ryan Stano
Recruiting is the most important part of any college football program. The Buckeyes recruit as well as any other program in the country as well. Ryan Day has emphasized recruiting heavily since he’s been the head coach of the Ohio State football program, especially at quarterback.
Day has talked multiple times about how he never wants to skip a recruiting class when it comes to the quarterback position. No matter how many good prospects Ohio State gets at that position, he never wants to skip a year when it comes to bringing in a quarterback.
For the 2023 class though, the Buckeyes don’t currently have a quarterback committed. They also aren’t in a position to get any of the top quarterbacks in this class either. They have Devin Brown for the 2022 class and they also have Dylan Raiola for the 2024 class.
Raiola is now the best player in the entire 2024 class, so maybe it’s not the worst thing in the world in the Buckeyes skip a class when it comes to the 2023 class. They have two really good quarterbacks for both this year’s class and 2024 to bridge that gap.
Raiola has a shot to start when he comes in as a freshman. He will be fighting with Brown for that starting spot in 2024. Day still might try to get a QB from the transfer portal to fill that gap just in case too. That would be what I expect the Buckeyes do. That’s Day’s MO.
Even if Ohio State doesn’t get a quarterback for this class, the Buckeyes are still in good shape at that position moving forward. It’s great to see how great Day is at recruiting that position, so we’ll see if this gap in the class ends up being a good thing.
