The Ohio State football program has already made a National Championship Game appearance in the Ryan Day era. That happened back in 2020 when Day was just in his second full year as the head coach. The Buckeyes ultimately lost that game, although it was an exciting season.

This upcoming season is way more exciting than that one was and will be the most exciting season so far in the Ryan Day era. Yes, that 2020 team was really good, but we didn’t even know if the Buckeyes were going to get to play that season, let alone play for a national title.

Now, things are pretty much back to normal. Fans will pack the stands and players will play as long as they are healthy. This team has a new defensive coordinator, a returning Heisman Trophy finalist, and the best receiver in college football. That’s about as exciting as it gets.

Will the Ohio State football team ultimately play for a national title like they did in 2020? I don’t know. That’s part of what makes this so exciting. Their schedule is favorable, so they definitely have a good shot. It all depends on how the team is able to implement the new defense.

That defense is going to determine whether or not this Buckeye team is good enough to win it all. There’s no question that this offense is good enough to carry the team to the National Championship Game again as it did in 2020, but a good defense is still needed to win it all.

Day is using his own players now as everyone who will contribute to this roster was recruited by him and not the previous coach, Urban Meyer. Now that Day has the type of players he wants in his program, it’s time for him and the staff to coach them up to their full potential.
