The Ohio State football program has gotten lucky when it comes to its run of head coaches. They went from John Cooper, who won a ton of games, to Jim Tressel, to Urban Meyer, to Ryan Day. All of those coaches were widely successful during their tenures with Ohio State and Day’s is still going on.

Meyer was the gold standard of those coaches. He won a national title in his third year of leading the program and had a recruiting record that was unbelievable. According to 247Sports, his recruiting classes were of the following rank: 2, 3, 7, 4, 2, 2. That’s a ridiculously good recruiting record.

It’s a record that Day is still chasing. Day has had four full recruiting classes so far. His class ranks have been 7, 5, 2, and 4. That’s still really good, but not quite as good as Meyer’s. He’s still chasing that recruiting record and amassing the amount of talent that Meyer did.

That doesn’t mean he can’t catch him. Day’s recruiting seems like it’s only getting better. Right now, he has the 5th ranked class for 2023. It’s still early in that cycle, so he’s expected to land a lot more prospects. Day is also getting great recruits at positions that matter.

Day has been getting great quarterbacks, running backs, and wide receivers to come in. Defensive ends have been great too. He just needs to work on both lines, linebackers, and the secondary. That has already started to improve too. Day’s recruiting is on the rise.

Whether or not Day is able to catch up to Meyer’s recruiting record is up to Day and his assistants. We’ll see if he and his staff are able to keep up their momentum and keep their recruiting dominance over the Big Ten.
