Ohio State Football: YAC a strength for the Buckeyes
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team had one of the best receiving corps in all of college football last year. They had two first-round wide receivers and another one that will get taken in next year’s draft. One of the biggest strengths they had last season is their ability to get yards after the catch.
That will be a big strength for this year’s receiving corp as well. We saw how well Jaxon Smith-Njigba was able to use that skill last year in the slot. He is going to do a lot of that again this year even though he is going to get the most attention from defenses all year long.
Emeka Egbuka has also shown bursts of speed with the ball in his hands as well. Even though he was mostly used in kickoff and punt return duty last year, he still showed some explosive tendencies. He also showed off his abilities after the catch in the Rose Bowl.
The only receiver who may not excel at getting yards after the catch is Marvin Harrison Jr. He’s the biggest of the receivers in the room, but can still get some YAC too. He just isn’t quite as fast as some of the other receivers the Buckeyes have. He won’t get as much YAC as them.
Ryan Day knows that this will be a strength of the offense. He knows that getting his receivers in space with the ball is going to result in great things. He’s going to scheme up his offense so that he gets each and every receiver out in space with the ball in their hands.
Making defenders miss is a key part of any offense. That’s what the Ohio State football team is looking to do this year. That’s a hard thing for defenses to stop.
