Ohio State Football fans shouldn’t worry about Ryan Day leaving
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football program will be led by Ryan Day for a long while after Gene Smith gave him an extension last week. His new deal runs through the 2028 season and gives him a nice raise as well. It shows that Smith likes where the football program is headed.
But what if Day decided to leave for the NFL? An NFL team could easily afford whatever buyout there would be. Well, Ohio State fans don’t need to worry about that. Day has said on multiple occasions, and reiterated yesterday on Morning Juice on the Fan, that he wants to stay here as long as they will have him.
Day has had an excellent start to his head coaching career. He has been very successful with on the field results as well as recruiting. He already has a National Championship Game appearance on his resume as well. But things will start to get harder now.
The roster is almost completely full of recruits he brought in himself now. Most of Urban Meyer’s players are gone now. It’s up to him to win with his own players. I don’t have any doubt that’s something he can do based on what we’ve seen so far from him, but it’s still a new challenge.
In my eyes, the only two ways Ryan Day leaves Ohio State is if he retires or he gets fired. Day certainly hasn’t performed poorly enough to have anyone question his job security at this point. Things can change of course, but I think Day has had enough of losing to TTUN already.
As long as the wins keep coming, Ohio State football fans have nothing to worry about. Day will be here until he decides he wants to be finished with coaching for good.
