The Ohio State baseball team is now looking for a new coach after Gene Smith decided to part ways with Greg Beals. Beals had been the coach of the Buckeyes for the last 12 seasons and took them to 3 NCAA Tournaments over that span. Unfortunately, this season was not going as well.

The Buckeyes were only 8-14 in Big Ten play and had a losing record overall this year. It was time for a new voice in the program as it seemed that Boals had kind of run his course here. Ohio State wasn’t really getting any postseason success either, so it’s time for a different voice.

Ohio State hadn’t made the NCAA Tournament since 2019. In fact, they made it three times in four years, making it in 2016 and 2018 as well. That was the most successful period of Beals’ tenure. Beals did lead the Buckeyes to a Big Ten Tournament championship in 2016 and 2019 as well.

I’m not going to pretend to be an expert on the baseball team. It’s not something I follow very often. What I do know about college baseball is that most of the championships are won by teams from the South. I also know that Ohio State should be able to do better with the resources they have available.

I’m not sure who Smith will decide to hire to take over for Beals. Like I said, I’m not much of an expert on this team. Whoever it is, I hope they can get the Buckeyes back to the NCAA Tournament. Winning Big Ten championships would be a nice goal to have too.

I wish Beals nothing but the best moving forward. He was a part of the Buckeye family for a long time and always will be.
