Ohio State Football: Strength of schedule will help Buckeyes
By Ryan Stano
In the first few years of the College Football Playoff era, the Ohio State football program has benefited from some strong scheduling. In years where they lost a game, they still got into the CFP because of a strong non-conference schedule and winning some key conference games.
While I’m not expecting the Buckeyes to lose a game this year, their strong schedule will still help them. It will help them not only when it comes to the selection process for the CFP, but it will also help them prepare for any opponents that they could face if they get there.
You want to play the best competition because then it helps you get better. That’s what is going to happen this season for the Ohio State football team. They are a young team on defense that needs to play some good teams to learn how to stop teams in crucial moments.
The best thing about the schedule for the Buckeyes is that there are some winnable games without the opponents being too soft. The non-conference games after the opener are all games Ohio State should win, and yet they are all still FBS opponents.
The strength of the Big Ten helps them too. The Big Ten wasn’t great as a conference last year but should be improved this year. While some may think that hurts the Buckeyes’ chances of winning the conference, I think it actually helps their chances.
It helps their chances because they can’t take a week off. They have to play their best every week, which is what you want your football team to do. That’s especially true towards the end of the season during conference play.
