The Ohio State football team has been the premier team in the Big Ten East for most of the time the division has been in existence. Before that, they were in the Leaders division. Soon, they won’t have to worry about being in any divisions at all after what the NCAA did yesterday.

The NCAA did away with any division requirements for conferences. That means that conferences can just have the two best teams face off in the championship game regardless of the divisions. The Pac-12 already announced they are going to do that starting this year.

It won’t be long before the Big Ten and other conferences follow suit. It just makes sense to have the two best teams in each conference face off against each other. While it could mean that the Ohio State football team takes on TTUN in back-to-back weeks, that won’t happen too often.

That scenario is why many people didn’t want the Buckeyes to be in the opposite division of the Wolverines. Traditionalists didn’t want the possibility of back-to-back matchups. While I’m not a big fan of it either, I am a fan of getting the two best teams in the championship game.

How soon the Big Ten will formally announce they will do away with divisions is unclear. My guess is that it could come as soon as 2023. I do know that it won’t be that long. They might even keep the divisions for scheduling purposes but still allow the two teams with the best conference record to play in the Big Ten Championship Game.

Everyone knew this was coming, and now the writing is really on the wall. It won’t be long now before Ohio State could start seeing new opponents in the Big Ten Championship Game at the end of the year.
