Ohio State Football: Is Gene Smith trying to run the new FBS?
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football program is 1 of 130 other FBS programs in the country right now. They are also one of the most successful ones in the country. Gene Smith, Ohio State’s Athletic Director has been a big reason why the Buckeyes have had sustained success over the past 20 or so years.
Smith raised some eyebrows a few weeks ago when he mentioned that the FBS should break away and have its own set of rules when it comes to football. It isn’t the first time that this topic has been mentioned, but it might be one of the few times that someone in a position of power mentioned it.
Smith has once again said something similar in a recent interview he gave with Athletic Director U. He thinks that the FBS teams have a level of commitment that area different than the other Division 1 schools and that the rules should act accordingly.
It almost seems like Smith is campaigning to run this so-called “new FBS”. He has made multiple comments about it recently now. He seems to feel pretty strongly about this. Perhaps he has an ulterior motive when discussing all of this. Maybe he’s trying to put himself in a position to be in charge?
Smith is already one of the most powerful athletic directors in the country. I’m sure he thinks that he would get the support of other athletic directors around the country if he wanted to move on from Ohio State and do something like this late in his career.
This is not something that is going to happen next year or even the year after that. It’s going to take many years to slowly integrate this change. It’s not something Ohio State football fans need to worry about yet, but it is something to keep an eye out for.
