The Ohio State football program is the second-winningest program of all time. They win a lot of regular-season games even now and are still a part of the College Football Playoff conversation every year. Even so, they’ve only won two national titles in the last 20 years.

Ohio State football fans expect the Buckeyes to go undefeated every year and compete for a national title. Anything less than winning it all is unacceptable. Every year that doesn’t end up hoisting a national championship trophy is viewed as a failure.

Are expectations too high around this program? No program is winning a title every year unless you’re Alabama. Clemson had a decent run there too. But it’s the southern schools that seem to have the edge in a national title race every year. Why do Buckeye fans think they can enter it too?

The answer is because of the amount of money the athletic department makes every year. They have state-of-the-art facilities that recruits should be drooling after, as well as a track record of developing elite talent for the NFL. That’s why Buckeye fans expect excellence every year.

Is this unreasonable? I don’t think so. I think as long as the football program keeps bringing in large amounts of money and they keep investing in facilities, there is no reason why the Buckeyes shouldn’t be able to win titles more often. That’s why fans demand it.

Why they haven’t been able to win more titles is a mystery. For one thing, they don’t have the greatest coach of all time like Bama does. But they have also had some recruiting misses too. Ryan Day is working hard to make sure that piece is something that stops.
