The three most unheralded coaches in Ohio State Football history
By Ryan Stano
Not many people think of Paul Brown when they think of Ohio State football. The fact is, they should. In fact, they should just think of Ohio when they think of Brown. He has his own name on a stadium for goodness sakes. He was a great Buckeye coach as good as he was a pro coach too.
While Brown only coached the Buckeyes for three seasons, he still started off the chain of success that they have now. Brown won the Buckeyes’ first national championship in the 1942 season. He also recruited some great players in the state of Ohio.
His recruiting efforts in Ohio gave the Buckeyes the first claim at great players in their home state. That’s a goal that Ryan Day still has today. He wants to keep the best players in the state coming to Ohio State just like Brown was able to do in the early 1940s.
Brown finished his Ohio State football career with a record of 18-8-1. While his run was a short one, it was a very important one. It gave the Buckeyes the recognition that they needed to become the powerhouse that they are today. Without Brown, who knows where this program may have gone.
Brown is in the Buckeyes’ ring of honor at the stadium. He’s known and revered throughout the state. He’s the most unheralded coach in Ohio State Buckeyes history and he needs to get more recognition for the good that he did for this program.
