Can Ohio State Football end the SEC’s reign of terror?
By Ryan Stano
If you take a look at the number of national champions in the last 20 years, most of them come from the SEC. In those 20 years, Auburn, LSU, Alabama, Florida, and Georgia have all won national titles. The Ohio State football team has only won two in that span.
Even so, they are the only northern school to be able to win it all. In fact, they are only one of two schools to play in the National Championship Game that is north of Clemson. Speaking of Clemson, Ohio State seems to have broken them. Can they break the SEC too?
The Ohio State football program is the only program not in the SEC that has consistently competed for national championships. Their most recent appearance in the game was in 2020 when they got stomped by Alabama, but at least they got there.
With the way the Buckeyes have been recruiting under Ryan Day, they seem to be the only program that has a shot to keep the SEC at bay. They’re certainly the only ones that have any consistency in making the College Football Playoff, although Notre Dame has made it a few times too.
This is a year that we will learn a lot about Ohio State’s chances to do just that. Georgia lost most of the players from their great defense, LSU is still a mess, and Florida hasn’t been elite in a while. Alabama is still a formidable opponent though so it won’t be easy.
If Ohio State does win a national title this year, it gives them further validation that they can compete on the national stage consistently. Nick Saban only has so many years left at Bama before he retires. They won’t rule college football forever.
That’s the void that the Buckeyes want to be able to step into. They want to be the next dominant team in college football.
