The Ohio State football team was not the best college football team in the state of Ohio last season. They lost two games in the regular season and didn’t make the College Football Playoff. Normally, that would still make them the best team in the state.

Instead, Cincinnati ended up taking that crown. They went undefeated in the regular season and made the College Football Playoff. It was clear that the Bearcats were the better team between them and the Buckeyes. That’s the first time that’s ever happened.

This year, the Buckeyes are trying to take back that Ohio crown. They want to be the best team in the state yet again. They can’t win a national championship if they don’t accomplish that first. There is never a year in which the Ohio State football team isn’t the best one in Ohio.

Ryan Day has made a lot of changes to the coaching staff and to the roster to make sure that it never happens again. He knows that it’s unacceptable to be second-fiddle in the state, especially when there isn’t another Power 5 school in the rest of the state.

Day will have his team ready to start the year, that much is certain. Whether or not they will be good enough defensively to beat Notre Dame in the opener is another thing entirely. They are better than Cinci on paper after the Bearcats lost a lot of talent to the NFL.

If Ohio State doesn’t end up being the best team in the state of Ohio, there will certainly be a price to pay for the whole coaching staff.
