Ohio State Basketball: Expectations for 2022-23 team
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State basketball team has its roster filled and its coaching staff complete for the 2022-23 season. There’s nothing left to add now except expectations for this group. Chris Holtmann knows he needs to live up to them if he wants to keep his job.
Looking at the roster right now, only two guys who played significant minutes from last year’s team are back. Those are Zed Key and Eugene Brown. They also get Justice Sueing and Seth Towns back, although it remains to be seen what Towns can still give this team.
The rest of the roster is made up of transfers and a big incoming freshman class. The Buckeyes have a top-five recruiting class coming in so those young guys should see a lot of playing time. At least one of the new transfer guards will be starting as well.
The question is how far this team can go with this squad. The expectation for this team has to be to make the Sweet 16. Anything less is a failure, and in my opinion, a fireable offense. Holtmann hasn’t made it out of the first round of the NCAA Tournament yet.
What the starting lineup is going to look like is also a question. Sueing and Key will start for sure, but after that, it’s anyone’s guess. Brown might start again at the three. If he didn’t improve his perimeter defense though, that’s going to be a hard sell to the fanbase.
If I had to guess right now, I’d say it’s going to be Bruce Thornton, Tanner Holden, Sueing, Key, and Brown. The offense is going to look much different than it did this past season. Key will be the inside presence, but I would expect a lot more perimeter scoring next year.
No matter what the starting lineup is, a second-round Tournament appearance is an absolute must for this Ohio State basketball squad.
