Ohio State Football needs a defensive leader
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team has a leader on offense in C.J. Stroud. Not only is he the best player on the team, but he’s the quarterback. With that position, leadership is incredibly important. The same leadership cannot be seen on the defense quite yet.
Ohio State needs to have a leader emerge on the defensive side of the ball. I’m not just talking about leadership in the sense that teammates can rally behind that guy. I’m talking about someone who has a big impact on the field and lets his game do the talking as well.
Right now, the Buckeyes don’t have that player. No one stepped up last year to assume that role. We thought it would be Zach Harrison on the defensive line. I doubt he’s going to do that this year. Haskell Garrett was the guy I would choose as the leader on last year’s defense.
Now Garrett is gone. It’s up to someone else to step into his role. I think there could be a chance that Josh Proctor steps not that role as a safety now that he is healthy and ready to go. He is trying to have a good senior year before moving on and potentially playing in the NFL.
It will be interesting to see which of these players on defense emerges. The defense doesn’t have to be great this season for the Buckeyes to compete for a national championship. They just need someone who can help show the way for the other guys.
We have about 6 months for the team to figure out who that player is going to be.
