For the first time in several years, the Ohio State football team tackled during the Spring Game. It was a stark change from the “thud” method that the Buckeyes have used in recent years. Quite honestly, it was refreshing to see some hitting out there this past weekend.

Ryan Day explained his reasoning for tackling during the Spring Game to the media. His reasoning was quite simple, the Buckeyes need to get tougher. He said that at times last year he thought the team wasn’t as tough as it needed to be, so they are trying everything they can to fix that.

It’s good that Day recognized that the team wasn’t tough last year. Last year’s team was soft at the point of attack on both sides of the ball against the hardest competition. Day is not letting that happen again this year. It’s good to see him making a change.

Whether or not tackling during the Spring Game helps with that toughness or not remains to be seen. Day did mention that since they have a big game to start out the season, against Notre Dame in the Shoe on September 3rd, they needed to go a little harder earlier than usual.

The Ohio State football team definitely needs to be more physical in 2022. They had way too many missed tackles and missed blocks in 2021. Toughness is the key to Ohio State making the College Football Playoff this year and contending for a national championship.

Saturday was the last that we will see of this team until that date with Notre Dame in early September. Now it will be up to the players to keep improving in the offseason and for them to get their bodies and minds right for the grueling season that lies ahead of them.
