Everyone who follows Ohio State football knows that Archie Griffin is the gold standard for players. He is revered by anyone around the program. Anyone that remembers watching him live will tell you just how good of a college running back he was.

Personally, I think he’s the greatest college football player of all time. He’s still the only two-time winner of the Heisman Trophy and set numerous records. Apparently, people at ESPN don’t quite think of him as highly as I do, even though they still like him a lot.

ESPN ranked the top 100 running backs in college football history over the past 60 years. They ranked Archie Griffin second on that list, only behind Barry Sanders. Griffin was ahead of Herschel Walker, Ricky Williams, and O.J. Simpson as the next three guys on the list.

I understand Sanders’ argument to be one on this list. He holds the record for the most rushing yards in a single season with an astounding 2,628 yards. He also did that in an astounding 11 games. But that was the only good college season he ended up having.

Griffin never rushed for less than 867 yards in his four years with the Ohio State football program, and that total was his freshman year. He never rushed for less than 1,450 yards the rest of his time with the Buckeyes. He also helped Ohio State win four straight Big Ten championships.

Griffin is still the gold standard for Ohio State football players and college football players as far as I’m concerned. He was the backbone of those Buckeye teams that were coached by Woody Hayes and is the reason why Ohio State has such a rich history of great running backs.

What do you think? Should Griffin be number one? Or do you think Sanders is better than him?
