The transfer portal is now a fact of life for the Ohio State football program. It’s something that head coaches have to navigate. Ryan Day has used it to his benefit already, landing Justin Fields from the portal back in 2019. It also bit him when Quinn Ewers left right after last season.

It appears that the Buckeyes have lost another player to the portal. According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, cornerback Lejond Cavazos is entering the portal. Cavazos now leaves a secondary that seems pretty crowded and he does so hoping to find more playing time.

I’ll admit, I had high hopes for Cavazos out of high school. He was a four-star kid out of Florida back in 2020 who I thought could end up making a real difference in Ohio State’s secondary. Instead, he leaves as a junior who could never find the field consistently.

Cavazos leaves the Ohio State football program only having played in five games in two seasons. He totaled 7 tackles and two passes defended. Cavazos really had an issue staying healthy. Because of that, he fell behind in the depth chart and ended up getting passed up.

Now he heads into the portal hopeful to find somewhere else where he can get snaps and actually have a chance to make an impact. Looking at the roster, it was going to be hard for Cavazos to do that in Columbus. There are just too many talented guys who have been able to stay healthy.

This isn’t a bad loss for the Buckeyes. They have plenty of other guys in the secondary who can fill the void. Denel Burke is a stud and they still have Cam Brown coming back this year too. Cavasos wasn’t in a position where he was going to get time.

We wish Cavazos nothing but the best at his next stop.
