Ohio State Football: Who is the quarterback of the future?
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team knows who its starting quarterback will be this season. C.J. Stroud will once again lead the team in 2022 as a junior. After the season though, he will likely enter his name into the NFL Draft for 2023 and start his journey as a professional.
That leaves the Buckeyes with a hole at the most important spot on the field. There are two options on the roster right now who could take that starting position once Stroud is gone. Those two guys are former five-star recruits, Kyle McCord and Devin Brown.
McCord will back up Stroud this season. We saw him play in the Akron game and he was good, but not spectacular. That was really the only time we saw extended action with him. In that game, McCord went 13/18 for 318 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception.
That interception was a very bad decision and a terrible throw. It was the decision-making of McCord that ultimately saw him lose the starting job to Stroud last season. He has the strongest arm on the team but needs to make smart decisions with the ball.
Brown is a five-star freshman this season and will be the third-string guy. He too has a very strong arm and was one of the best quarterbacks in the country in high school. If he wants to beat McCord out for the starting position next season, he’s going to have to show something special.
This isn’t a question that needs to be answered now, but there’s no doubt that McCord has the upper hand in this battle. Brown has a whole year to show that he would be the right choice, at least of quarterbacks currently on the roster. Incoming recruits might have something to say about this too.
