The Ohio State football team lost two regular-season games in 2021 for the first time since 2017. It was one of the most disappointing seasons for the Buckeyes in the last couple of decades considering they played for a national championship in 2020.

Ohio State faced adversity last season in those two losses. Losing to Oregon spurred a defensive coordinator change from Kerry Coombs to Matt Barnes. Ultimately, both left the program and now the Buckeyes have Jim Knowles leading the defense as the coordinator.

The loss to TTUN spurred a change on the offensive line. After not being able to run the ball when needed at all, Ryan Day fired Greg Studrawa and brought in Justin Frye to coach the offensive line. Now he has someone that he thinks will fix the toughness issue up front.

That adversity will help the Buckeyes in 2022. A lot of the players on this roster had only experienced great amounts of success. They didn’t know what it was like to lose in the regular season. Now that they felt that pain, they certainly don’t want to feel it ever again.

Day will channel those feelings to help strengthen this team mentally. The lack of mental toughness was perhaps the biggest flaw this team had last season. He’s hoping that all of the changes he made on staff will help fix that problem on both sides of the ball.

Adversity brings the most out of people. It helps you figure out what kind of person you want to be. Are you going to run and hide from adversity? Or are you going to embrace it and learn from it? That’s what the 2022 Ohio State football team is all about.

I bet this team embraces it and learns from the failures they had a year ago. They should be a better overall team this season.
