Ohio State basketball: Holtmann found the point guard of the future
By Jacob Rhymer
The Ohio State basketball team has a loaded recruiting class coming in next season. Holtmann may have found the point guard of the future for this Buckeye program in this class.
This last Ohio State basketball season, a main problem within the Buckeye offense was the lack of consistent production out of the guard position. The headliner of this recruiting class could change that narrative for next season.
Incoming 4-star point guard, Bruce Thornton, was named the 2021-22 Gatorade Player of the Year in Georgia and he brings a lot to the table for this Ohio State roster next season.
Thornton is a really gifted scorer and is a threat from anywhere on the floor. His ability to score the ball at an elite level will be huge for this Ohio State team next year. He can finish through any amount of contact on a drive to the rim, has a nice mid-range jump shot, and has the capability to step out and shoot the three.
The Buckeyes are in desperate need of a scoring point guard that can orchestrate the offense and is comfortable with the ball in his hands in a late-game situation. Thornton fits that role perfectly and he’ll provide a tremendous boost to this Ohio State team next season. If he can pair up in a backcourt alongside potentially Malaki Branham and a healthy Justice Sueing, the ceiling would be really high for the Buckeyes next season.
As it always has been in March, the games are won in the NCAA Tournament because of the guard play. We saw that in Ohio State’s NCAA Tournament exit from Collin Gillespie and Villanova. If Holtmann and the Buckeyes want to make a deep tournament run next season the guard play has to improve. I think that Thornton can be the guy that helps get this team to the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament.
The recruiting class this upcoming season is full of talent and Thornton is the headline of it. Thornton has all the right tools in his bag to be the go-to guard for the Buckeyes next season.
